Moors make it North East double

-

CLEETHORPES Town must be sick of the sight of North East clubs in national cup competitions.

Just months after their 4-0 FA Vase Final hammering at the hands of South Shields, the Owls were dumped out of the FA Trophy by a profressional display from Spennymoor Town.

The Moors were made to work hard by the Evo-Stik South side in the opening stages, with neither side creating much of note.

The first real chance fell to the hosts as captain Alex Flett smashed a rising shot over the Moors bar after latching on to a Kallum Griffiths clearance.

The Moors took their time to get going but took the lead with their first chance of the game.

There were 35 minutes on the clock when Ryan Hall latched on to a Rob Ramshaw pass and confidently placed the ball past Owls keeper Richard Walton.

The lead could and should have been doubled 10 minutes into the second half as Hall misplaced a pass to Graeme Armstrong when the striker had the goal at his mercy.

Ramshaw then went close after collecting a pass from Matty Dixon but his deflected effort went narrowly wide.

Armstrong had a header cleared from the line and Dixon forced Walton into a stunning save as the Moors looked to press home their advantage.

They finally secured the win as Mark Anderson and Andrew Johnson combined for the latter to double their lead with three minutes left.

The hosts pulled one back through Luke Mascall but it’s the Moors who progress into the next round.
