Goals inside the final 10 minutes from substitute James Vaughan and then George Honeyman gave the Wearsiders their first win since they defeated Norwich City in August.

More importantly, this win over relegation rivals Burton Albion lifted them off the foot of the table as they leapfrogged both the Brewers and Bolton Wanderers to go thirdbottom, and it narrowed the gap between them and fourth-bottom Birmingham City, who drew 1-1 with Sheffield United in the late game, to two points.

Sunderland also kept their first league clean sheet since they won 2-0 at Hull City in early May – 22 games ago.

The win was celebrated wildly by the Sunderland fans who made the trip to the Pirelli Stadium, with both goals coming in front of the sold-out away end.

The only negative was that Vaughan was booked for his own celebrations, and that was his fifth yellow card of the season meaning he will miss next weekend’s home game against Reading.

Coleman made two changes to the side that started the midweek defeat at Aston Villa.

Lee Cattermole missed the game at Villa Park through suspension but returned against Burton Albion, taking the place of Darron Gibson.

And the second change saw Paddy McNair – who was left out against Villa as a precaution having played the full 90 minutes against Millwall 72 hours earlier, and having recently returned from a cruciate ligament injury – come into the side in place of Lynden Gooch in midfield.

Burton boss Nigel Clough also made two changes to the side that drew at Brentford in midweek.

Joe Sbarra and Will Miller came into the side in place of Matthew Lund and Kyle McFadzean.
