Anti-Islam Trump revelling in chaos

Strain telling on ‘Special Relationship’ after tweets

President Donald Trump’s finger is not quite as on the pulse as he seems to think DONALD Trump is a bigot.

And that’s not news. It’s been clear for a long time.

Take his response to the terrorist attacks that killed eight people in London in June.

This is when terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in nearby restaurants and bars.

Mr Trump focused on attacking London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan.

First the President accused Mr Khan of telling Londoners there was “no reason to be alarmed”. Then he claimed Mr Khan had made up a “pathetic excuse” to explain his words.

Mr Trump’s response was remarkable because the US is meant to be our greatest ally – and he actually boasts about how much he loves the UK.

You’d expect his response to a terror attack in London to be one of unqualified sympathy and support.

So what has he got against Mr Khan? Well, the answer seems to be that Mr Khan is a Muslim, a category of people the US President clearly has a problem with.

Some people will say that’s not racism because Islam is a religion or an ideology.

It’s a fair argument in theory but there really is no connection between the religion or ideology of Mr Khan and the death-cult that slaughters people in the Middle East or, when it gets the chance, countries like the UK. It’s like linking the Spanish Inquisition to a Church of England vicar.

One way or another, Mr Trump is motivated by prejudice.

And this is why he retweeted videos from far-right organisation Britain First.

One of them showed a young man attacking a second man on crutches. The text accompanying it stated that the attacker was a Muslim migrant.

Was that actually true? Reports from the Netherlands, where the video was filmed, suggest it’s not.

Mr Trump probably didn’t know who either of the people in the video really were. But he didn’t care. It fitted in with his view of the world.

Our Prime Minister, Theresa May, has said Mr Trump’s actions were wrong.

But she will now come under pressure to go further, and to cancel his planned state visit.

She’s in an impossible situation. As we leave the EU, we need our partnership with the US more than ever. Most of all, we need a trade deal.

And Trump, vile as he is, could be in the White House for seven more years.
