Sell United now before it’s too late, says Shearer

-

ALAN Shearer has called on Mike Ashley to sell Newcastle United after watching they the Magpies fall to a 3-2 defeat at St James’ Park to sour the club’s 125th-anniversary celebrations.

Prior to kick-off, flags marking key moments in the club’s history were waved on the Gallowgate and Leazes to mark the club’s birthday and United got off to the ideal start with Joselu scoring early on.

But in an end-to-end game, Leicester got back into the match before taking the lead on the hour mark through Demarai Gray. Dwight Gayle got United level on 73 minutes but an Ayoze Perez own goal handed Leicester the win.

United have now collected just one point from a possible 21 and Rafa Benitez’s warning about the lack of quality in the side now looks as if it is ringing true.

And for Shearer, who was one of the players voted into the club’s greatest ever XI, enough was enough. Tweeting after watching the game from his private box at St James’ Park, the club’s record goal scorer had a message for the club’s owner.

“Nowhere near good enough today. Sell our club Mr Ashley to someone who wants to be here before it’s too late again.”

Shearer was appointed caretaker Newcastle manager nearly a decade ago but after the club slipped to relegation, the club opted not to appoint him. He was conspicious by his absence on the field at half-time as other United legends were introduced to the crowd.

His words will certainly meet with approval from the vast majority of supporters. Amanda Staveley is the front-runner to buy the club and she was snapped meeting Ashley at London curry house earlier this week. Alan Shearer is a legend to Toon fans
