Small waters benefit from mild weather

- BY PAUL ARMSTRONG

ALTHOUGH we’ve had quite a bit of rain this past week, the much milder conditions have made a vast difference to sport, especially on some of our smaller waters.

Ide and roach are now showing up in nets at Dissington Pond, and some fair mixed nets of silvers along with the occasional chub have been recorded at Hebron Lakes.

With temperatures for the coming week being forecast to highs of 17 degrees, things can only get better.

The third round of the Whittle Dene Spring Series turned out to be another very successful match, with good conditions and a full attendance contributing to the result.

Karl Robson won the day with 13lb 9ozs, which consisted of 109 fish in total. Steve Wood took second with 11lb 10ozs, ahead of Terry Guthrie with 10lb 6ozs. Section wins went to Wayne Grabham, Paul O’Donnell, Peter Arkless, Terry Crosby, Chris Gowling, Barry Evens and Nick Jose.

As the weather improves, then so does Whittle Dene. Anglers fishing the waters in preparation for today’s match have taken nets to 18lbs.

The open at Eden Grange last Sunday saw Tony Dowson win with a bit of a runaway weight of 45lb 8ozs. Dylan Blyth took second with 20lb, ahead of Danny Cunningham with 17lb 9oz.

The Angel of the North are now taking names for the May Bank Holiday Mini Festival. The twoday event will take place on the May 27 and 28, fishing Lookout Lake then Bowes. Entry fee is £65, with a £30 deposit securing your place.

Last Sunday’s open on Lookout was won by Alan Le Patourel witH 90lb 15ozs, followed by John Dryden with 73lb 14oz ahead of Derek Fox with61lb 5ozs.
