NEWCASTLE BENFIELD 0 JARROW ROOFING 3

-

A frantic goalmouth scramble in yesterday’s clash between Newcastle Benfield and Jarrow Roofing in Northern League Division One Grainger and into the net.

The hosts could have been three down at half-time had the near-post not kept out a powerful header from Anth Myers after he was found by a Knight corner.

Benfield needed a fast start after the interval but the first chance fell to the visitors.

The hard-working Oliver Martin broke into the right-hand side of the Benfield area and pulled the ball back for Paul Gardiner but his drive was deflected into the arms of a relieved Grainger.

Benfield took until just after the hour-mark to show any signs of mounting a comeback as Jack Devlin twisted and turned inside Vipond before unleashing a low effort that was saved by Regan at the second attempt.

Clearly the next goal would decide the game and it was Knight that sealed the game for Roofing.

The striker was found by a fine crossfield pass from Lewis Walton and danced inside two Benfield defenders before firing past Grainger from around 12 yards.

That all but killed off the hosts who were let by the poor quality of their decision making in the final third of the pitch.

Too many times during the secondhalf Benfield worked themselves into good positions but players chose to play the wrong ball and the chances went begging.

A long-range Richie Slaughter shot and a Brayson free-kick were the sum total of their efforts to mount a comeback. Both efforts were comfortably saved by the impressive Regan.

There was a sting in the tail for Roofing as captain Vipond was shown two yellow cards in a minute for pulling back Brayson and then for angrily contesting the decision.

But the visitors saw out the remaining 10 minutes and were good value for their three points.

It was in many ways a surprise win, but one that will give them plenty of confidence ahead of a crucial fortnight for the South Tyneside club.
