Selection headache for Rafa at Arsenal

-

RAFA Benitez knows he will have to make a difficult decision or two ahead of today’s home clash with Arsenal – and that’s just to decide who will be on the subs bench.

In recent weeks, the likes of Mikel Merino has found himself in the role of spectator in the stands while another high-profile first teamer will have to make way for Islam Slimani in some way against the Gunners.

Benitez didn’t have a single injury to report in the build-up to the game and knows he has some tough choices to make.

Talking about his welcome selection headache, Benitez said: “Even now we don’t have competition just to get into the opening XI, it’s competition to get into the squad.

“That is difficult but it is positive news for any manager. All the players have to perform well in every training session.

“It’s the best news you can have as a manager.”

Benitez has hailed the impact of players such as Martin Dubravka and Kenedy since they arrived on loan while also reserving special praise for Paul Dummett.

The United chief feels that the Magpies’ upturn in fortunes since the start of the calendar year has been largely down to the trio’s contributions.

He said: “The team is doing well.

“But Dubravka, Kenedy, and Dummett have given us something different in the last few months.

“Slimani can also bring something different now he’s fit. We needed what they brought to us – more composure on the ball.

“They have also improved the level of every player here because each player has to fight for their position.” Islam Slimani
