Shields celebrate league trophy presentation with home win

- MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields rounded off another successful season with a home win against Colne.

First-half goals from Lee Mason and Carl Finnigan were enough to secure all three points on a day when the club received the Evo-Stik North championship trophy.

The visitors arrived at Mariners Park needing a win to give them a chance of securing a play-off place.

Slowly but surely the Mariners found their feet and only a goal-line clearance from Chris Lynch stopped Julio Arca giving his side the lead on 32 minutes.

The deadlock was broken just a minute later as Lee Mason continued his impressive run of form by forcing a Dillon Morse header over the line from close-range.

The lead was doubled two minutes later as Carl Finnigan took a pass from Michael Richardson before cutting in on his right-foot and firing a low drive past Colne keeper Hakan Burton.

The visitors halved the deficit shortly before half-time when Waqas Azam’s long-range effort squirmed through the hands of Liam Connell.

The Mariners took their time to get going after the restart but created chances with the likes of Lee Mason, Robert Briggs and substitute Luke Sullivan all going close.

The Mariners were reduced to 10 men on 84 minutes when Matty Pattison was shown a second yellow card.

But the hosts held on to record yet another win before the title celebrations got under way at a packed Mariners Park.
