Quakers turn to teen to see out last-day fight

-

INJURY-HIT Quakers finished their campaign with a deserved 1-1 draw at Edgeley Park in front of a 6,163 crowd.

Quakers were without five players because of injury, but with 16-year-old Mitch Glover in the side, they battled hard for a point.

Stockport had some good chances early on. Darlington defender Josh Heaton cleared a shot by Sam Minihan off the line after six minutes, then Bohan Dixon fired straight at Aynsley Pears from 10 yards out.

Scott Duxbury also put a header half and set up Thompson, who sidestepped a defender and fired into the bottom corner for his 11th goal of the season.

Stockport were stunned by the goal, and didn’t really threaten Quakers much, with the visiting back four outstanding.

However, Quakers were caught cold after a break in play on 63 minutes when Dan Cowan, the Stockport full back, ran 20 yards and hit a right-footed shot past Pears into the bottom corner of the net.

Quakers nearly won the game after that, with Thompson and Styche going close, while at the other end, Pears was hardly troubled despite all of Stockport’s pressure.

Quakers used two teenage subs, Brad Moncur and Jamie O’Brien, in the last minute. No sooner had they set foot on the field, then the ref blew for time, for possibly the shortest ever Darlo debuts.
