TRIBUTES PAID TO JOAN

Reporter LOVING tributes were yesterday paid to the One Stop shop stabbing victim as a lad of 19 appeared in court accused of her murder.

Ethan Mountain is alleged to have killed Joan Hoggett on September 5.

The 62-year-old died after being found in the One Stop shop on Sea Road, in Seaburn, Sunderland, with stab wounds.

Mountain was charged with murder on Friday and appeared before magistrates sitting at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday.

During a brief hearing he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

Mountain, of Heaton Gardens, South Shields, who was wearing a grey tracksuit, was remanded in custody during the hearing.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court for a bail hearing on Tuesday.

Police were called to the One Stop shop at 10.41pm on Wednesday - shortly before it was due to close.

Forensic officers and police carried out intense inquiries in the area, while both Roker Park and Cornthwaite Park in Sunderland were both cordoned off for several hours as they were searched.

After Ms Hoggett’s death, flowers were placed outside the store in memory of the Grindon woman.

Friends and neighbours also paid tribute to a “lovely lady”.

Samantha Willis, 50, said: “I just burst into tears when I heard.

“She was a lovely lady, very sweet, always on at night and she worked hard.

“She was very quiet, very reserved and very respectful.

“She always had a smile and just got on with her job.”

Shakeel Rahman, 44, who works in a mobile phone shop nearby, added: “She was nice and polite.

“She only served me two days before.” And Mark Shergold, 40, said: “She was a really nice woman. It’s just terrible. I don’t know her name, I just know her to speak to. She’s only a little lady, she’s very polite and that.”

A One Stop Shop spokesman told of their horror at the tragic event and added: “We are shocked and saddened by the incident, our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to our colleague’s family and friends at this difficult time.” ONE STOP SHOP
