Comets too quick for desperate Diamonds

COMETS DIAMONDS

NEWCASTLE Diamonds arrived at the Workington Comets last night in the hope of keeping their fading chance of a play-off place alive.

But after only four heats, it became painfully obvious it was going to be a tough night.

By Heat Six, a home 5-1 meant Newcastle were already 26-10 down.

Tero Aarnio, covering for the injured Ashley Morris, took a second in Heat Seven behind Workington’s guest Aaron Summers in a Comets’ 4-2 but another home 5-1 in Heat Eight put their advantage at a staggering 22 points.

That scoreline was repeated in Heat Nine, which was followed up with a Workington 4-2 in the 10th.

With five heats to go, the Comets were motoring with an unassailable 44-16 advantage.

With Morris still on the side-lines for tonight’s clash at Brough Park (6.30pm) between the Diamonds and Scunthorpe Scorpions, the home side is desperately looking to re-group after the Cumbrian disaster.

Newcastle team manager George English said: “The less said about last night the better, but we have to regain some pride tonight and make sure we bounce back with a good home win.

“As Scunthorpe are led by our former number one, Stevie Worrall, it’s going to be another hard-working 15 heats.

“They also come armed with one of the actionmen of the sport, the always exciting Jason Garrity, who has had some good races at Brough Park, so we cannot sit back and relax tonight.”

The Scorpions also bring a thrilling new young Aussie in Jake Allen, top British youngster Josh Auty, back from injury, alongside American Gino Manzares.
