Voting open for this year’s regional boxing awards

-

The 2018 North East Boxing awards will take place on Friday, October 12 – with voting for North East Boxer of the Year already open. Last year’s ceremony was the first of its kind, with British Boxing Blog and Steve Wraith coming together once again to host an evening to celebrate all that is good about the sweet science in our region. And what a resurgence the sport has had in the North East in the last 12 months – thanks largely to the rapid rise of British lightweight champion Lewis Ritson, and as a result promoter Eddie Hearn’s newfound love of Tyneside.

On top of Ritson’s incredible story, Thomas Ward continued to make a move towards world honours, while Glenn Foot refuses to be put down – claiming the Commonwealth title against the odds.

It’s fair to say the sport is buzzing in the North East right now, and hosting the event the night before Matchroom Boxing’s big show at the Metro Radio Arena is no accident.

The event will take place at Antler on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle City Centre on October 12 between 7pm and midnight. Tickets are free for the event and can be obtained by emailing British Boxing Blog at info@britishboxingblog.com.

Steven Lowe – one half of British Boxing Blog – said: “It’s great to be involved in hosting the North East Boxing Awards again this year. Credit must go to Steve Wraith for organising it and to Portland Consultants (Lee Barr) for sponsoring the event. If it’s anything like last year I’m sure it’ll be a great night. It’s a chance for the North East boxing community to get together away from the pressures of fight night, for fans and fighters to mix and have a drink/some food together.”

Awards up for grabs on the night include Fighter of the Year, Prospect of the Year and a Lifetime achievement award. Last year Newcastle featherweight John Davison was recognised for his career.
