UTS thump visitors to secure passage

- ANDREW McDONNELL

DUNSTON UTS will be in the hat for the second qualifying round of the FA Cup after they thumped Evo-Stik Northern Premier side North Ferriby United 4-1 at the UTS Stadium.

Liam Brooks opened the scoring after three minutes before second-half goals from Scott Heslop and Mark Fitzpatrick put the hosts in complete control.

Jamie Forrester pulled a goal back for North Ferriby, but it turned out to be a consolation as Liam Thear put the icing on the cake for Dunston on 86 minutes.

South Shields got their FA Cup campaign up-and-running with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Garforth Town.

Gavin Cogdon broke the deadlock on 34 minutes before Blair Adams scored two goals inside the final four minutes of the first half.

Left-back Adams wrapped up a sixminute hat-trick, just after half-time, and Matty Pattison added a fifth goal on 63 minutes.

Garforth did manage score a consolation after Curtly Martin-Wyatt found the net on 77 minutes, but it’s the Mariners who progressed through.

Consett ensured at least four Northern League teams will be in Monday’s draw as they edged past Congleton Town.

The only goal of the game came four minutes after half-time as Richard Juul’s cross was headed home by Michael Sweet.

Newcastle Benfield came from behind to force a replay with Northern Premier side Workington.

Niall Cowperthwaite tapped home from close range on 57 minutes – but Dale Pearson equalised on 77 minutes for the hosts, who reached the third qualifying round of the competition last season.

Morpeth Town will also have an FA Cup replay through the week as they came from behind to draw with Ashton Athletic.

The hosts, who beat Morpeth in last season’s FA Vase, went ahead through George Hassell.

However, Walton stepped up and converted a late penalty to force a replay.

Guisborough Town suffered a 4-0 defeat against Farsley Celtic.
