Pervert in assault ‘had trousers at his ankles’

SHOCK ATTACK ON BARMAID

- By Sara Nichol Reporter sara.nichol@reachplc.com

A PERVERT with his trousers down sexually assaulted a barmaid by pulling her hand towards his crotch.

Drunk George Brown asked the shocked victim to “touch something for me” and pointed her hand towards his genital area while they were alone on a Newcastle street.

A court heard the woman pulled away and was horrified to notice the 58-year-old’s trousers were “around his ankles” before she fled the scene.

She later reported him to the police and Brown, of Brian Roycroft Court, Byker, subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault on the basis he couldn’t remember the incident.

Kirstie Devine, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, said the assault happened on a street in Newcastle late on the evening of May 22 last year.

She added: “The defendant asked the woman for a cuddle and grabs her and asks ‘Will you touch something for me?’ and pulls his hand to his crotch.

“She say no and pulls away, then realises the defendant’s jeans are around his ankles.”

The victim later called the police and Brown was arrested.

In a statement, the woman said she had suffered multiple breakdowns because of the assault.

The court heard Brown, who has one past conviction, had no memory of the incident.

His solicitor Paul Cassidy added: “He has to accept what the victim said happened did happen.

“He has suffered from depression since 2008.”

District Judge Sarah Griffiths told Brown the offence was serious because he had targeted the woman when she was on her own and he was drunk at the time.

He was given a 10-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay £250 compensation to the victim.

He was also told to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years
