A SOCIAL club has had to close its doors after a customer tested positive for Covid-19.

Only days after welcoming customers back, the Springbank Social Club in Benwell, Newcastle, has announced a customer has coronavirus.

A SOCIAL club has had to close its doors after a customer tested positive for Covid-19.

Drinkers were pleased to have their local club back after Boris Johnson gave the green light for pubs and restaurants to reopen as lockdown eases.

But only days after welcoming customers back, the Springbank Social Club in Benwell, Newcastle, has announced a customer has coronavirus.

It means they have had to close the premises in Newcastle’s West End for a deep clean and are using its track and trace system to get in touch with other drinkers who were also in the club.

Staff closed the premises on Condercum

Road on Friday and put a notice on Facebook saying they are following Government guidelines and will keep everyone informed.

And the post has been shared hundreds of times.

The “important notice” said: “We have had a customer tested positive for Covid-19. Due to Government guidelines we are closing the club now. We won’t be open tonight, until further notice. We will be in touch with customers who have been in since Sunday 12th July, using our track and trace system. We will keep everyone informed. Please stay safe.”

Secretary of the club Bruce Timsley, 75, said: “We got a phone call on Friday from a member saying she had tested positive for coronavirus. She was in last Sunday night and her family will also have to be tested.

“My son, Mark, is the steward but because I am the secretary and the licencee, it is me who has the authority to close the club. I shut at 7.30pm last night after Mark received the phone call and I put a notice on the door saying ‘we are closed.’

“We opened on July 6 and have made all the adjustments to meet with regulations.

“We have a book in place where everyone leaves their contact details, so my son has been on the phone contacting everyone who was in the club over the 72 hours from Sunday.

“On average we get about 30 customers a day.

“We have two cleaners in to sanitise everything today and tomorrow. We hope to be able to open on Monday.

“I am over the moon with our customers. They have done everything they should and they are obeying what I call the members’ law.” On Facebook customers have praised Bruce and Mark for their quick response.

Danielle Glenwright wrote: “Can’t do anymore than that.

“Well done closing for deep clean and publicly letting people know. Just relying on customers not to go in ill is the issue.” Lisa Christer posted: “Good on you for publicly informing people.”

Maria Boyd: “Thanks for letting us know. Well done.”

Ray Bottleo said: “Hope everything is OK. Well done.”

Patsy Laidler posted: “Better to be safe, well done.”
