SHELVEY: NO NERVES PLAYING AGAINST LIVERPOOL

PLUS MUCH MORE IN 16 PAGES OF SPORT

- Lee Ryder

JONJO Shelvey insists he no longer has any nerves when facing his old club Liverpool.

Shelvey, who is Newcastle United’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with six goals, is desperate to add to his tally.

He does not believe he has to prove a point to the club which sold him for £5million to Swansea City in 2013 after just 17 top-flight starts for the Reds.

When asked if he has any jitters facing the men from Anfield, Shelvey said: “I did for the first few years after I left but the novelty has worn off now.

“It is just another game on the fixture list now.

“They are a great team and rightly winners of the Premier League.”

It has been a huge week for Liverpool after they lifted the Premier League trophy and then partied hard this week with friends and family to celebrate the club’s first title since 1990.

Shelvey admits he hopes the celebrations have taken their toll on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He added: “Hopefully they have been on the p **** for the last three days!

“But no, seriously it is going to be a good game.

“These fixtures between Newcastle and Liverpool have always been great down the years so it is going to be a good game – it is just a shame the fans are not there.”

Midfielder Shelvey will hope he can repeat his man-of-the-match performance in the last game of last season against Fulham, when scored in a 4-0 win at Craven Cottage.

He went on: “I heard on the radio one of Bobby Robson’s quotes about finishing the season strongly.

“It has been in my mind coming into training.

“Hopefully we can do it on Sunday, it is going to be a tough game but one we feel we can get something out of.”
