BLACK CATS RARING TO GO

-

SUNDERLAND legend Kevin Phillips says he knows ‘exactly what the playing budget’ is for the Black Cats next season and claims ‘it is a lot.’

Phillips labelled the Wearsiders a ‘mess’ under the ownership of Stewart Donald but insists the Black Cats have the budget in the summer to lodge a third promotion bid under the Oxford-based businessman’s ownership.

The club remains on the market with Donald confirming he is looking for a buyer during a heated meeting with fans’ representatives last week.

He then caused fury by slapping a £37.6m asking price on the club.

A number of parties are said to be interested in buying the Wearsiders, though, and one man who is trying to drum up interest in the Black Cats is former Sunderland defender Micky Gray.

Phillips claimed he has been contacted by a consortium wanting to know more about the Black Cats ahead of a potential takeover bid.

Energy drink tycoon William Storey also claimed on Friday he had lodged a formal takeover bid for the Stadium of Light outfit.

In the meantime, Sunderland will prepare as normal for the new season and Phillips has hinted the club will have a healthy budget heading into the summer transfer market.

He said: “When he first came into the club it was clear what Donald wanted.

“It was promotion and to then move the club on and make a profit.

“He is a businessman, no problem but you have to have contingency plans. It is clear he did not have those.

“The club is in a mess at the moment.

“I am not going to tell you but I know exactly what the playing budget is for next season and it is a lot.

“It remains to be seen whether he will keep his word on that.”
