Lucky escape for man hit by bus

A MAN was taken to hospital after he was hit by a bus near Newcastle Central Station.

He had a lucky escape, walking away with just a graze to the head following the collision on Friday evening.

Two police vans and an ambulance could be seen on Grainger Street near the junction to Westgate Road after he was knocked down just before 9pm.

A spokesman for Northumbri­a Police confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

He said: “At 8.45pm police received a report of a road traffic collision between a bus and a male pedestrian.

“It is believed that he suffered slight minor injuries.

“He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by ambulance.

“Motor patrol officers dealt with everything at the scene and the usual investigat­ions took place.

“The road was reopened at 9.20pm.

“No arrests were made at the scene.”

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8.45pm to a road traffic collision involving a male.

“He just suffered a graze to the head but was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The collision affected public transport in the area as the road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Go North East tweeted: “Due to a police incident in Newcastle we are unable to serve Central Station area.

“All Eldon Square services using St James Boulevard.”

They confirmed that services were back up and running by 9.45pm.
