CRAIG JOHNS BREAKS THE FIRST RULE Best Foot forward as Glenn takes next step

-

GLENN Foot has signed up to meet Londoner Philip Bowes for the vacant English title as he targets major bouts and belts.

The Sunderland pugilist has had some rotten luck in recent years, which has stopped him really capitalising on his big Prizefighter victory back in 2013.

Usually a catalyst for bigger things, injuries and fights falling through meant that the aggressive and fan-friendly boxer hasn’t yet lived up to his potential.

He would eventually get a shot at the British title in 2015 but it was only after a serious arm injury which meant he wasn’t as active as he should have been.

Sam Eggington outclassed him in that title defence, with Glenn’s size being a major factor also, as he struggled to get close to the much taller Birmingham champion.

Glenn has recovered from that well though, and has found himself injuryfree and a lot more active since that, which has itself enabled him to move down a weight to super lightweight.

Even this most recent momentum has been met with frustration though.

An against-the-odds victory over Adam Little in December in his backyard was supposed to be a British title eliminator, but the British board have not ordered Glenn to fight champion Tyrone Nurse.

Instead manager Phil Jeffries and trainer Dave Binns set up a European title shot for him but that fell through too.

So that’s why Glenn will find himself travelling to the capital to take on Bowes on May 27, after signing the contract this week to meet in Bethnal Green’s York Hall.

The English title isn’t the major title that Glenn and his team would have wanted, and probably deserved a shot at, but it can be a stepping stone towards it.

Joe Hughes was the most recent Sunderland fighter Glenn Foot (left) takes on Philip Bowes in London next month for the English super lightweight title holder of the English strap and last night he was the latest to challenge Nurse for the British, meaning the English is now vacant. It’s a winnable fight for Glenn too. Bowes has a record of 15 wins and two losses, with only two early stoppages.

His two defeats were on the rare occasions that he’s fought people with winning records – one aforementioned Hughes.

His most recent victory to earn this bout with Glenn was an impressive win over previously-unbeaten-in-20 prospect Nathan Dale, but again Dale had built his record largely fighting boxers with losing records.

On paper, it would appear Glenn’s been in with the slightly better being the opposition and also has a solid amateur background too.

Fights aren’t won on records and paper, however, so Glenn will have to make sure he’s at his best. With a trainer like Dave Binns he’s in the best possible hands though.

This could be last chance saloon for Glenn’s shot at the big time. He has the talent, hopefully he can live up to it.
