Magpies sign up Toffees’ Yarney

-

NEWCASTLE United have signed Everton teenager Josef Yarney on trial.

The 19-year-old centre-back came on as substitute in the Newcastle Under-23 team’s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Friday night.

Liverpool-born Yarney is coming to the end of a two-year professional deal with the Toffees and will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season.

He worked his way up through the ranks at Everton after being on their books as a scholar.

Yarney made three appearances in Everton’s EFL Trophy campaign but he is likely to leave Everton without making a first-team appearance.

Yarney played his part in the victory on Teesside to help ensure Newcastle finished in a respectable third place in Premier League 2’s second flight.

Tom Heardman and Adam Wilson grabbed the goals to secure three points with Newcastle now looking forward to a play-off semi-final on home soil.

With some league games still to be played, United must wait to see if they face Fulham, Blackburn Rovers or West Ham in the semi-final game.

Newcastle’s recruitment search at Under-23 level is already under way with the Magpies looking to improve their second string for next season. Everton youngster Josef Yarney
