The junction that leaves you with no way out

Miss that sign on the right on Percy Street in Newcastle and you are suddenly in trouble – as you can’t go anywhere legally at the crossroads that is coming up FOR first time drivers, heading through a busy city centre can be a daunting prospect.

Not only do you have to face one way routes and bus lanes, but there is also the dreaded congestion which can make the journey a slow and painful one.

In Newcastle, there is one junction which can make the trip a little more frustrating.

One motorist said the junction on Percy Street with the Gallowgate often leaves them with nowhere to go.

He said: “When heading south down Percy Street, you reach the junction and are not allowed to turn left, right or go straight ahead.

“You’re not even allowed to make a U-turn so effectively you can’t go anywhere.

“Your only choice is to make a right turn and hope you don’t get a fine.”

The problem is some motorists miss the sign by the mini-roundabout saying only buses, taxis and cyclists are allowed to go ahead.

And for those who don’t see it, they reach the traffic lights where they are told they can’t turn right.

Frantically trying to make sense of what went wrong, drivers have no choice but to turn right onto the Gallowgate, which leads towards Newcastle United’s St James’ Park.

This junction is the latest in a series of confusing, irritating and irrational road layouts that we will be looking at.
