If you set a person’s worth by their ability at their job, I would argue that May has set the bar very low, although to be fair she almost makes up for her political shortcomings in entertainment value.

But compare May to Gary Lineker, who has got the biggest kicking in some quarters.

Lineker was a very talented footballer who could find the back of the net with aplomb and was much respected by all the teams he played for and is now an excellent broadcast- er. If I’m honest his £1.8m salary was a bit of a whistle inducer but I have no doubt ITV for one would love to poach him and would pay him much more.

Meanwhile May is a failure as a politician after scoring a series of own goals.

She is increasingly disliked and mistrusted by the public while her colleagues are biding their time before they unceremoniously kick her out.

One final thing. How timely for our politicians that this BBC pay list came out in the week of when parliament went into recess - ie holiday time for our MPs.
