Impressive Lens finds net as form thrills fans

- Sean McCormick

DESPITE his long-term Sunderland future remaining in doubt, Jeremain Lens continues to impress for the Black Cats in pre-season.

The Dutch international scored his fourth goal yesterday – and the Black Cats’ second – in the win over Bradford City.

After creating the opener for Josh Maja, Lens got on the scoresheet himself with another fine strike. He also struck the free-kick winner against Hartlepool on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old collected the ball on the right-hand side, skipped by the challenges of two Bantams defenders before delightfully finding the top corner with his left-foot shot.

Lens spent last season on loan with Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce and both Fener and Turkish champions Besiktas are keen on signing him on a permanent basis.

Nevertheless, with 12 days until Sunderland’s season opener against Derby County, it is becoming increasingly likely he will remain at the Stadium of Light.

And given his pre-season form, it would be a no-brainer to start him against the Rams, and despite a difficult past, Sunderland fans are excited about the possibility of Lens starting the Championship season as a Black Cat.

Ed Syers tweeted: “It would be a ludicrous scenario, but can’t help think about how unstoppable Lens would be this season. I’d rather cash in, but what if...”

Jack Fromme said: “I hope we keep Lens!”

And Jonny Hosler added: “He could literally be the difference in us being promoted if he stayed.”

Ross Hendrie simply said: “Lens must stay. Lens must play.”

However, Leigh Collins Warin remains cynical, as he tweeted: “Interesting that Lens is looking class in preseason. Most motivated he’s been since joining (And that’s because he wants to leave).”
