Young keeper cannot stop fired-up Dunston

Barwell star Seals victory

- BY MARK CARRUTHERS

WHITBY Town were beaten in their first game of the Evo-Stik League season as a Ryan Seal goal gave Barwell all three points in Leicestershire.

Substitute Seal struck in the last ten minutes to give his side a 1-0 win.

The two sides swapped early chances as Mikey Roberts went close inside the first five minutes for the Seasiders but was denied by keeper Liam Castle.

Canaries debutant Ryan Robbins fired narrowly wide of Shane Bland’s far post. In a frantic opening to the second period, Castle would frustrate Whitby again with an outstanding stop to deny Bythway.

With little action of note, both managers made changes, and it was the hosts that got it as substitute Ryan Seal was played through on goal and slotted the ball past the advancing Shane Bland. They were wise words as they secured their first three points of the new season with a 2-0 win over Consett at the UTS Stadium.

Things hadn’t started well for the visitors, with goalkeeper David Knight pulling up with an injury in the warm-up.

It would be the start of a miserable day for Consett, where very little went right.

That meant 18-year-old Ross Coombe taking his place in goal.

In the 20th minute, the Steelmen were grateful to the youngster as he produced a fine save from a Dale Burrell penalty.

Minutes later, there was to be no reprieve for the young stopper or his side.

And the goal came from a familiar face.

Some quick passing from the hosts opened up the Consett defence and allowed former Steelmen player Jake Stafford to finish easily to give his side a deserved lead.

Consett manager Mark Eccles went for a change in formation and personnel at half-time, as he looked to get his side back into the game.

Jack Elliott and Chris Rogan replaced Lewis Teasdale and Nathan Convery and the changes made an impact, with the Steelmen starting the second half on top.

However, they were to be their own worst enemy as midfielder
