Toon must have no regrets at end of season

Paul Dummett's ready to go

PAUL Dummett wants Newcastle United to have “no regrets” in the Premier League this season.

The left-back was part of the United team that were relegated but stuck with the team and helped win the Sky Bet Championship title last season.

Dummett could be one of seven players that start the first game back in the Premier League who also featured in the 3-0 win against Barnsley in May.

Now, though, Dummett wants to ensure Newcastle don't end up in a relegation battle again this term. He said: “You have to be solid. “A lot of time under Steve McClaren, we did not play really badly. We were just conceding soft goals.

“In the Premier League, it is ruthless.

“When teams get chances and you give them chances, they take them.

“One of the things Rafa Benitez changed for the last ten, or particularly the last six was to make sure we did not concede goals.

“The more clean sheets you keep, the more games you will draw or win so keeping clean sheets will always give you a better chance of winning.”

When asked what Benitez's mood had been like this summer, despite a lack of signings, Dummett said: “He is really positive.

“I do not think he could be negative around the team because I would say it would only bring the team down.

“Yes, he is really positive around the training ground.

“I have never seen him be upset about the (lack of ) signings either around the player or around the training ground.

“He obviously would not want that because you do not want to be going into a season when the whole team is down.

“You want to be positive and ready to go.”
