Shakes rattles goal as

Gateshead’s Scott Barrow drives at the Boreham Wood defence in the National League GATESHEAD conceded a late goal for the third consecutiv­e game at the Internatio­nal Stadium – three points dropped from the last two.

The Heed led against Boreham Wood through Wes York’s first goal of the season on the half hour.

It was an advantage they could not add to, despite an improved secondhalf display, and they paid the price.

The Wood equalised three minutes from time through midfielder Ricky Shakes – their only shot on target in the second half.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Gateshead boss Neil Aspin, who has been installed as 3/1 on favourite to become Port Vale’s next manager.

“It’s always disappoint­ing when you’ve got the lead and you concede a late goal,” said Aspin, “and we could have pushed on more in the second half.

“We had a couple of chances but not enough to kill the game off, and when it is 1-0, you can always get pegged back.

“I would like to have got the second goal because that would have put the game to bed, but there were some pleasing aspects.

“It was good to see Scott Barrow coming back and for Wes York to get his first goal of the season.

“We had the better efforts at goal but I would like to have had more possession in the second half.

“We should have defended the cross better for their goal, especially with the lead, but there were some better aspects to our play.”

The opening 25 minutes produced as turgid affair, substitute Burrow heading just wide before the game sparked to life.

Burrow, on for the injured Richard Peniket, laid Barrow’s cross into the path of York, who found the far corner.

The Wood then spurned two great chances to level in first-half stoppage time.
