Butler did it as West End dump Moor out of cup

SUNDERLAND West End sent Wearside League leaders Cleator Moor Celtic out of the Monkwearmo­uth Charity Cup with an impressive 3-1 win at Ford Quarry.

John Butler hit a brace and Bryan Norton got the other West End goal, with Darren Johnston scoring for the Cumbrian outfit.

In-form Hebburn Town Reserves were knocked out of the cup by an impressive display from Redcar Athletic.

Brian Stewart scored twice and both Adam Preston and Stuart Brown grabbed a goal each as Athletic came away from South Tyneside with a 4-0 win.

Silksworth Colliery Welfare came out on top in a five-goal thriller against Hartlepool FC.

Brandon Alderson, Jona Hodge and Dave Stevens were on target for the Wearside outfit.

The visitors made a spirited comeback, as Mike Snowdon reduced the deficit and Jamie Tumility made it 3-2 with minutes remaining.

But Silksworth held on to qualify for round two.

Former Tow Law Town striker Kai Hewitson was on form as his hat-trick helped Annfield Plain to a 3-1 win at South Shields Reserves.

And Windscale produced their best performanc­e of the season as Ryan Byrne and Lewis Jolly were on the scoresheet in their 4-1 win over Coxhoe Athletic.

There were also two Wearside League fixtures played yesterday.

Boldon CA thumped six goals past struggling Stokesley SC, scoring three times in the last five minutes in their 6-0 win.

That solidified their position in the top five of the Wearside League.

There were also six goals in the league’s other fixture as Philip Otele and Tony Johnson both hit braces in Wolviston’s 4-2 win at Darlington Reserves.

Richmond Town were in North Riding Cup action and they secured a 3-0 home win against Northbank thanks to two goals from Wayne Gredziak and one from 16-year-old Nathan Simpson.
