BURTON ....................................................................2 Championship in frantic finale

-

Paddy McNair reacts after missing a chance and, inset, Jason Steele of Sunderland scores, but the goal was controversially ruled out for handball

O’Shea hit the crossbar from a McGeady free-kick as the game moved into injury-time. And then Boyce got on the end of sub Turner’s cross to head Burton in front in the 92nd minute.

There were dramatic scenes in the final minute of injury time when McNair almost had the shirt ripped from his back, and as he tumbled to the floor he landed on the ball and it went in off his arm.

Referee England awarded the goal but the Burton players convinced him to consult his assistant, and he then awarded a free-kick for handball.

And with that, Sunderland’s last chance was snuffed out.
