Golden arches for eyesore

WORK is under way on bring a McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru.

The fast food giant has confirmed contractor­s have started work on the new restaurant in Stanley, County Durham, but have not revealed an opening date.

Once open, McDonald’s said it will create dozens of full and part-time jobs.

A spokespers­on said: “We can confirm we have started work on-site in Stanley, with a view to opening as soon as possible.

“The new restaurant will bring investment to the local community as well as creating at least 65 new full and part time jobs.”

The firm lodged plans to knock down an empty building off Ritson Street to make way for the two-storey restaurant which was welcomed by residents and Coun Carl Marshall said it was “fantastic news” and would get “rid of the eye sore that is Townley House”.
