Spennymoor eye play-off places

-

SPENNYMOOR Town moved to within touching distance of the National League North play-off places with a hard-earned away win.

Jason Ainsley will take credit for the win as late goals from substitutes Adam Boyes and Mark Anderson helped the Moors to an impressive three points.

The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges but it was the Moors that had the best chance of the first 20 minutes.

It fell to former Ashington striker Glen Taylor, found by Rob Ramshaw, but he could only fire a low drive straight at keeper Tony Breeden.

There was a warning for the Moors on 26 minutes as Matt Stenson sent a header wide of Matt Gould’s far-post after losing his marker in the area.

The Moors were in the ascendency before half-time and Taylor came close to putting his side ahead as he swapped passes with Andrew Johnson before forcing Breeden to tip his shot over the bar.

Leamington started the second half on top with chances for Stenson and Callum Gittings but neither could test Moors keeper Gould.

James Curtis was next to try his luck as he fired over the crossbar but it was a sign that his side were getting on top. The first goal finally arrived as Adam Boyes side-footed a Taylor cross past Breeden just three minutes after replacing Johnson.

Fellow substitute Mark Anderson secured the points as the game went into injury-time as he lashed home from close-range after Breeden had denied Taylor and Boyes.

The three points take the Moors up to eighth in table and they sit just one place and one point outside of the play-off places.
