Syers was then unlucky to see a clever flick cleared off the line, then Nicholson broke clear but miscued into the keeper’s hands.

Chances kept coming in the second half. Syers had a volley deflected wide, and Ben O’Hanlon fired into the side netting.

Saunders headed against the bar from a O’Hanlon cross, then Hughes, up from the back, headed a corner just over.

When Syers hit the post with a right-foot shot on 74 minutes, Quakers were concerned about the sucker punch.

But they got a second on 79 minutes, when Syers flicked a long ball on for Saunders to run through and lob the keeper.

And with two minutes left Nicholson was brought down by sub keeper Andy Wycherley and Thompson scored from the spot.
