Boat anglers rewarded for braving strong winds

The gale force winds last week put paid to most anglers’ plans, but those who got out in between the strong winds found plenty of fish.
Two boat anglers, Norbert Shroeder and Ash Orwin, had a great session midweek, fishing over the wrecks seven miles off shore.
They took 28 fish ( six cod to 9lb, two Pollock to 12lb and 20 ling up to 19lb), proving there are plenty of fish out there.
Seaham’s North Pier has fished well with codling up to 5lb, along with good bags of whiting.
There have also been a few dogfish taken, along with spotted rays and thornback rays up to 10lb.
When there was a bit of movement on the water, The Target at Ryhope produced codling to 4 ½ lb.
Hendon Prom has given up bags of whiting along with codling up to 3lb.
The mouth of the River Wear produced good bags of whiting, with the Glass Centre prom and the Old North Pier the top marks.
Codling up to 6lb have been taken from Roker Pier, with the end of the pier and The Barrier giving the best results.
Crab and cart baits have tempted the fish from The Barrier, whereas lugworm/ frozen blacks and squid baits have been best on the end of the pier.
Lee Douglas used frozen blacks and squid to take three codling for 11lb from the pier end.
The Rock Marks at Whitburn and Marsden are still giving up a few codling to 5lb, but a good northerly swell will bring more fish into these marks.
The mouth of the River Tyne has fished well for codling and whiting, with most of the codling around the 1 ½ lb- 2lb bracket, with the odd one going to 4lb – The Groyne and The Walkway are worth a try.
There have been codling further up river, but maybe all the fresh water coming down river might push the fish down to the estuary.
Further north, Rock Marks at Cambois, Newbiggin, Howick and Amble have all seen double figure bags of codling up to 6lb.
Only four out of the 22 anglers who fished last Tuesday’s Ryhope Sweepstake managed to weigh in seven cod between them.
Chris Hossack took first place with 5lb 12oz from the Barrier at Roker Pier.
Lee Burton took second and third with 4lb 6oz and 2lb from the Target, then Stu Carr secured fourth place with 1lb 1oz from the round head at Roker Pier.
In last Friday’s Seaham Badger Open competition, 27 anglers fished in terrible conditions, but some good fish were brought to the scales, with the top three being codling.
Winner M. Biffetti had 5.11lb, J. Greaves in second place had 3.53lb, then N. Smith took third with 2.47lb.
Biffetti took the heaviest bag title with six fish for 8l. 87lb and also the pairs’ event alongside I. Ainsley, with seven fish for 9.68lb.
Forty anglers fished Monday night’s Cleadon SAC match in windy conditions and 13 anglers returned to the scales with a mixture of a good stamp of cod, whitings, and coley.
T. Tate took first place with five fish for 14lb 6oz from Hendon. Runner up G. Gardner has three fish for 7lb 4oz also from Hendon.
Third place and the heaviest fish title went to L. Jackson with a 6lb 3oz fish from Marsden.
On Sunday, Ryhope SAC fish their Christmas competition ( 1- 6pm), Sunderland SAC will be out ( 1- 5pm) and Seaham SAC will fish their Christmas Fayre ( noon- 5pm).
Ryhope’s midweek sweepstake takes place on Tuesday ( 7- 10pm). Registration and weigh- in will be at Ryhope Community Centre. Entry is £ 5, with payout for the heaviest single fish.
The Wearside Fisherman’s Locker match will take place next Wednesday ( 7.3010.30pm). Entry is £ 10 (£ 8 for longest length and £ 2 for the longest fish) with 100% payout. For details of entry call Andy on the number below.
On Sunday, December 27, the Alberta SAC will hold the Reg Francis memorial competition ( 11am- 3pm). Entry is £ 10 with 100% payout. Registration ( 10- 10.30am) and weigh in ( 3- 3.30pm) is at Jarrow Riverside Park.
Also taking place that day is the ‘ Get Carter Open’ ( 10am3pm). Boundaries are Horden Fox Holes to Hartlepool Heugh Pier. Registration ( 7.309.30am) is at Blackhall Colliery Navy Club.

HHAuthority has revised the by- laws on the use of edible crab as bait.
Anglers fishing north of the Tyne can use edible crab as bait for recreational rod fishing as long as the crab is above the statutory minimum size ( 130mm across the back).
