Two arrests over armed robbery bid at petrol station
Detectives were last night quizzing two men after a raider armed with a Samurai sword tried to rob a Wearside petrol station.
The Bells Hill service station, on the A690 at West Rainton, was sealed off by police officers after the attempted robbery, which happened at about 2.50am yesterday.
No one was injured in the raid, and the Samurai sword believed to be involved has been seized by police.
The garage was sealed off yesterday morning before reopening later in the day.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “A man with a Samurai sword attempted to rob a service station at West Rainton in the early hours of yesterday morning.
“The incident happened at around 2.50am at the Bells Hill service station.
“Nothing was taken and no one was injured. The Samurai sword believed to be involved in the incident has been recovered by police.
“Two local men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and are currently being questioned by detectives.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.”
A patrol car blocked the entrance to the garage yesterday morning, with the shop sealed off with police tape. It reopened for business later in the day.
A forensic team from Durham Constabulary arrived at the scene, and an investigation remains underway.
A member of staff at the garage declined to comment.
