Twenty-five jobs will be created with the opening of a new fashion streetwear and sportswear shop in The Bridges.

Footasylum, which stocks leading sportswear giants Nike and Adidas and contemporary names such as Vans, Converse and Puma, along with up-and-coming brands including 11 Degrees and Sik Silk, is set to launch next month.

The new opening – which will be the third store in the region – is part of an aggressive expansion plan.

“This will be our 47th store nationwide and we’re looking forward to moving to the Bridges at an exciting time, ahead of a wave of new Footasylum store openings across the UK,” said Head of Retail Glen Dickinson.

“Our new, well-located unit will give Sunderland’s shoppers access to leading sportswear and streetwear brands – many of which have not been available in the city before.”

Bridges centre director Andy Bradley said the arrival of another national brand in the centre showed the confidence retailers had in Sunderland.

“We have seen a number of big high street retailers coming into Sunderland in the past year,” he said.

“And we’re delighted that we can now count Footasylum among that number.

“This shows how the city is becoming increasingly attractive to major names and that we are continually growing the already-strong offer we have for shoppers.”

The new 180sqm unit will be next to Schuh and H&M.

The Bridges is set to expand in the near future.

Plans have been submitted to the city council to create a new 45,000 sq ft, two-storey Next store on the former Crowtree site.
