Staff and students at a Wearside school are celebrating being praised by Ofsted inspectors.

The education watchdogs said The Venerable Bede CE Academy was good in every area following a recent visit.

The report into the Tunstall Bank school said pupils making strong and sustained progress across a wide range of subjects.

It said: “There are good programmes in place to support pupils who enter the school with low levels of attainment. These pupils’ reading skills develop quickly as a result.

“Additional funding for disadvantaged pupils is used well. Disadvantaged pupils and those who have special educational needs or disability make as much progress as other pupils across a broad range of subjects.”

The inspectors said the quality of teaching is good and pupils have a positive attitude and apply themselves diligently.

Inspectors added: “The school’s Christian values ensure pupils develop a tangible sense of mutual respect, tolerance and consideration for one another.”

Gill Booth, executive headteacher at the academy, said: “We are delighted with the Ofsted report. The Ofsted inspectors were particularly impressed with the “positive attitudes” and behaviour of our pupils in lessons and around school.

“We would like to thank our pupils and parents for their support, and our staff for their tireless dedication to improving the life chances of our young people.”

David Airey, head of school, added: “This report is something to be very proud of. It comments not only on the strong academic progress of our pupils, but also how school prepares pupils well for life.”
