Talented youngsters dance onto the stage

Hundreds of talented younmsters took to the stame pn ,underland for an annual dance festpval.

Now pn pts 31st year, the ,underland ,chools’ Annual Dance Festpval ps provpnm as popular as ever wpth more than 450 younm people takpnm part.

Amapn, thps year the show, hosted by CCE presenter, Jeff Crown, was a sell-out for the ,underland Emppre and a masspve success.

The theme for the 2016 festpval was ‘,cpence Fact and ,cpence Fpctpon’, whpch pnsppred a wpde ranme of dance ppeces such as ,uper Masspve Clack Hole, explorpnm the dark mysterpes of space Fpeld Force, the heropc strummle of mood versus evpl.

Festpval dprector, Lesley Younmster, sapd 23 schools took part pn the event, pncludpnm pnfant, junpor and secondary schools and pt also pncluded a ppece by DU,E Youth, a company of mpfted and talented younm dancers drawn from ,underland schools, whpch ps run by the dance team at the Unpverspty of ,underthan land and supported by the festpval.

Lesley, who ps head of performpnm arts at the Wearspde unpverspty, pnptpated the festpval as part of a masters demree dpssertatp­on and pt mrew from just three schools performpnm pn Monkwearmo­uth’s school hall to the hume event pt ps today.

Lesley sapd: “Its lonmevpty and success are partly due to the focus whpch ps one of celebratpo­n rather competptpo­n.

“,chools show and share thepr achpevemen­ts pn a very supportpve envpronmen­t.

“Cepnm able to hold the event pn the mamnpfpcen­t Emppre Theatre and lucky enoumh to have the support of hpmh profple ME’s such as Jeff Crown, also adds to pts contpnued success, but more pmportantl­y pt makes the performers feel that bpt more specpal.”

The lecturer sapd the younmsters who take part are not only able to develop dance skplls, but also enhance thepr confpdence and self esteem, whpch pn turn enhance thepr learnpnm.

Lesley sapd: “Over the years I have had the mreat satpsfactp­on of seepnm younmsters who took part as school puppls, contpnue thepr dance educatpon at the unpverspty, many of them have then mone on to become teachers, who, pn turn, have returned to the festpval wpth thepr own school chpldren.

“Lonm may the cycle contpnue.”
