Homing in on a great challenge
CITY HOUSEBUILDER PREPARES FOR CHARITY MISSION TO CREATE HOMES FOR ORPHANS
A Sunderland housebuilder is preparing to lay the foundations for better futures for African families as part of fundraising efforts for a global charity.
Dad-of-two David Kempster from South Bents, forms part of a 16-strong team of Miller Homes employees from across the UK who have volunteered to take part in the Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Trip in September in Salima, Malawi.
During the trip, the 43-year-old, who has been with the company for seven years, will take part in a homebuilding project to create new ‘Habitat Homes’ for orphans and vulnerable children, helping to make a real difference to those living in poverty housing.
Habitat for Humanity is the housebuilder’s nominated charity for 2016 and over the course of the year, Miller Homes has pledged to raise £100,000 for the charity’s Hope Builders Campaign – enough money to build over 30 ‘Habitat Homes’.
David, who oversees Miller Homes’ Park View development in Gateshead, said: “I feel very proud to have been chosen to represent the re- gion in the Global Village Trip. I’ve always been a supporter of charities and donated money here and there, but I have never taken on a big challenge in aid of a charity.
“To help meet the £1,000 target which each of us volunteers has been asked to raise as part of our contribution towards the company’s £100K pledge to Habitat for Humanity, I’m doing all sorts of fundraising including a real challenge which I took on earlier this month – a 210 mile bike ride from Edinburgh to Sunderland.”
