Thanks went to children at Easington C of E Primary School who kindly donated non-perishable food to the East Durham FEED Project. The FEED project is in desperate need of donations of non-perishable food. There has been an increase in the need for food parcels and over the summer holidays, the project expects that need to increase. Since the start of the project more than 6,000 adults and children have had a food parcel. The school had a collection point for ‘FEED Fortnight’ last month.

Easington Village lunch club closed last Wednesday for a four-week break to give volunteers a well-earned rest.

Mindfulnes­s is a free six-week course starting on Friday, August 12, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Healthwork­s. This course will look at: beginners’ mind awareness; becoming aware of our bodies and sensations; breathing and body movement; accepting and letting be; staying in the present and taking care of ourselves and using what we have learned.

Hawthorn Parish Council has been successful in its applicatio­n to register the Stapylton Arms pub as a community asset. Successful registrati­on allows the community up to six months to look at buying the asset or looking at how it can be retained for community use. Bridge Street, recommence on Wednesday, September 7. From Sunday, August 21, to Wednesday, August 24, Townswomen will visit Chester for a four-day holiday.

Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm. Tomorrow from 11am to 4pm, meet in the Foghorn Field for 50 Things Activity Day, including bug hunting, pond dipping, snail racing and lots of other outdoor adventures. Be prepared to get a bit mucky, which is all part of the fun. This is a free event but some activities may attract a small charge. On Friday, the first of three Swash yer Buckle events for pirates of all ages takes place in the Foghorn Field from 11am to 4pm. Cost is £3 per person and come dressed-up (optional) for salty sea dog shenanigan­s. Dogs on leads are welcome. On Monday, from 11am to 4pm, join ORCA Shore Watch at Souter and learn about dolphins and porpoises. Everyone is welcome, no experience is needed. This is a great opportunit­y to learn more about these fascinatin­g sea mammals and how to spot them. Admission charges to the lighthouse apply and booking is essential on rachael.forster@orcaweb. org.uk , or call 293 6202. Everyone is welcome, children must be accompanie­d by an adult but no dogs are allowed. Following an identifica­tion workshop, there will be a chance to observe from the shore and help gather invaluable data to aid conservati­on.

The Gaslighter­s will be playing on Saturday in the Victorian Bandstand in South Marine Park from 2pm to 4pm. This is a free weekly event with a different group each week until September 3, sponsored by the Friends of North and South Marine Park.
