This year the Hetton Carnival will also be included with this event. The Friends of Hetton Lyons Country Park will be in attendance. There will be various amusements for the children, craft and food fair, bands and picnic areas. There will also be a book sale, plant sale (it hoped to have English Blue Bell Bulbs for sale), doggy tombola and various raffles. The next meeting of the Friends of Hetton Lyons Country Park will be on Thursday at 6pm in the Visitor’s Centre in the park. Hetton School has sent more than 1,000 text books to Book Aid Africa. Students Beth Laybourne, head girl, Euan Parker, head boy, and Niamh Dawson, deputy head girl, helped Julie Chalk, Preparatio­n for Adult Life Co-ordinator at the Church Road school, with the books. Hetton School would like to thank John Roxby Travel for delivering the books to Book Aid Africa.

Nidderdale Centre is looking for new members to go along and enjoy the events held daily such as bingo, tea and coffee morning and special events throughout the year. All are welcome to see what is on offer. For more informatio­n call in, you will be very welcome.

Age UK 50+ open forum will be held on Friday from 10am to noon in the Metcalfe Centre. It is an opportunit­y to discuss any day to day issues you may have over a cup of tea. At Houghton Older People’s Enterprise meeting in the Methodist Church hall at 1pm on Thursday One Accord musical ladies will perform a popular concert with proceeds for The British Heart Foundation.

At the Rotary Club, treasurer John Kerry presented for approval the club accounts for the year ended June 30, which showed £6,041 used from the community service account in support of local bands, schools, senior citizens and other worthy causes. He was thanked by his colleagues for his excellent work. Speaker was member Godfrey Young about common phrases still in regular use and their origins, some of which were most unusual. The next Plays in the Park will be George and the Dragon, which will be performed in Mowbray Park on Saturday at 5pm and on Sunday at 11am, 2pm and 5pm. The event starts at the Museum and Winter Gardens.

Hendon History Group talk will be The Folk of Hendon by speaker Pauline Hilton on Thursday at 6.30pm in the Carnegie Community Corner (the former Hendon Library Villette Road).

Sunderland Antiquaria­n Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquaria­n and Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace are currently open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.

There will be a Princess Picnic at the Canny Space Holy Trinity Church, East End, on Thursday from 1.30pm to 3pm. Princess Belle will be telling stories in the oldest library in Sunderland at 1.30pm and 2.15pm. There is no need to book, just pay on the gate on the day, £4 per child with accompanyi­ng adults free. Take your own picnic blanket, food and drink. Dressing up is encouraged and boys and girls are really welcome to go along and join Princesses Belle, Rapunzel and Cinderella for an afternoon of dancing, stories and songs.
