The Academy at Shotton Hall has been hailed for achieving the best GCSE results across all County Durham, as well as the school’s best-ever grades.

A total of 81% of students passed English and maths at grades A* to C, with 80% passing five or more GCSEs at A* to C including English and maths.

A third achieved three or more A or A* grade GCSEs with 20% achieving five or more A or A* grades.

Lesley Powell, executive principal and chief executive of the North East Learning Trust, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to our teachers and staff who work tirelessly to give our children equal access to the very best educational opportunities, and who, like me, are absolutely thrilled with our students’ achievements.”

At Easington Academy, 69% of its 134 students achieved five A* to C grades, including English and maths.

Headteacher Toni Spoors said: “This is another successful set of results, building on the excellent progress the school has made in recent years.”

At Seaham School of Technology, a total of 67% of students achieved grade C or higher in both England and maths and 61% achieved “far more good grades” including those two subjects.

Headteacher David Shield said: “These excellent results have been down to the dedication and huge effort over many years of both students and staff, who worked so well together.”
