Bertrand poised to return for Cats test
Southampton will find out today if England left-back Ryan Bertrand will be fit to face Sunderland at St Mary’s.
Former Chelsea man Bertrand is still to play for new boss Claude Puel, having sustained an injury in pre-season training.
But he is expected to be available for the clash of two sides seeking a first win of the Premier League season.
“Ryan Bertrand has recovered and it’s important that he can come back into the team because he is an experienced player,” Puel told saintsfc.co.uk.
“We will see (today) if he is ready for the squad. He came back to training sessions this week and we will see if he can participate for this game.”
He will challenge England U21 cap Matt Targett for a start.
Saints should also have former Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu fit to retain his place, having been forced off at Old Trafford last Friday night,
Puel added: “Oriol is okay. It was an injury about five minutes into the last game and it was a shame to lose him for that match.
“But Oriol seems to be okay and he will be ready for Saturday’s game.”
French defender Jeremy Pied is unavailable, leaving Cedric Soares unchallenged for the right-back slot.
“Jeremy has a problem with his knee. We will see how he is for the next few weeks,” revealed Puel.
“It’s a pity and shame to lose him, but he must recover and be ready to play.
“All of the other players are present for this game.”
