Ayumi sparkles in seven-gold medal haul

City of Sunderland ASC picked up 66 medals in the first gala of the new season, the Billingham Autumn Meet.

The young Wearsiders, with a number of gala debutants, landed 22 gold medals, 21 silvers and 23 bronzes.

Ayumi Faulds led the way with a haul of seven gold medals in the girls’ 9-10 years category. She won the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, the 100m and 200m breaststro­ke and the 100m and 200m butterfly. She led Sunderland home to the first three places in the 200m backstroke, ahead of twin sister Yuki, and Riona Sorianosos. Sunderland had the firts four in the 100m backstroke, with Riona second, Tilly Abbott third and Yuki fourth, all posting personal bests.

Ayumi managed four other PBs, including 38.81sec in the 50m backstroke, 1.22.67 in the 100m butterfly and 2.58.86 in the demanding 200m butterfly. She also secured a silver in the 50m breaststro­ke.

Kenneth Juan, in the 1112 age group, won three gold medals in the backstroke discipline, ending victorious in the 50m, 100m and 200m events, posting 2.51.26 in the longer distance.

In the boys’ 9-10 section, Luke McGee secured three gold medals. He set a PB of 1.26.45 to win the 100m butterfly, took the 20m freestyle in 2.37.75 and also landed the 200m backstroke title.

Seventeen-year-old Callum Walker enjoyed two gold medals. He swam the 50m breaststro­ke in 33.22 to win, adding the 200m breaststro­ke in 2.39.20.

Lara Greggs won two golds in the 13-14 girls section, impressive­ly winning the 100m backstroke and 200m breaststro­ke, in which Lliasa Redda took bronze.

Tilly Abbott had two successes in the 9-10 girls competitio­n, winning gold with a new PB of 1.20.15 in the 100m freestyle and also taking the 200m medley. Yuki Faulds was runner-up in the freestyle, with Helena Wyness third in both races.

In the 15-16 category, Adam Boxall won the 100m backstroke in 1.10.35, adding a silver in the 200m backstroke.

Louis Bradley-Godfrey won the 9-10 years 200m breaststro­ke, with clubmate Alfie McGuire taking silver. Both had new personal best times.

Yuki Faulds won a great race in the girls’ 9-10 200m freestyle, pipping Loftus Dolphins’ Lois Hickson to the gold, while Helena Wyness secured a bronze .
