Festive joy as lights are switched on
Families got into the festive spirit as the Christmas lights were switched on in Ryhope.
The Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Alan Emerson, led the big switch-on of the lights, which were funded by residents.
Members of residents’ group Ryhope Community Spirit raised more than £1,000 to buy a tree before fundraising for new decorations.
The organiser of the switch-on event, Cris Watson, was delighted with how it was received, and how many people turned out.
She said: “I was really happy with how it went.
“There was such a great turnout, despite the fact we couldn’t put lights on our real tree, because it’s still just a baby.
“Next year, it’s going to be an even bigger and better event.
“Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and we’re going to work even harder over the next 12 months to secure the funds we need to make it even better.”
There was a visit from Santa Claus and his sleigh, as well as stalls, a tombola, live music from Miss Lola Dee, hot and cold food, classic cars and 4x4s.
Ryhope’s celebration was followed by Seaham’s switch-on last night, which saw Santa arrive on North Terrace, before the procession made a stop outside Byron Place Shopping Centre.
It then headed up Church Street, as the town’s display was lit up for the first time for the season, accompanied by carols and a brass band. Youngsters also enjoyed fairground rides set up by Seaham Town Council, which operates the decorations.
The town’s ecumenical carol service will be held at 7pm on Wednesday at St Mary Magdalen’s Church, in Harbour Walk.
Music will be performed by Seaham Town Band and the event will be followed by refreshments in the church hall.
