Going from strength to strength
The Sixth Form at Southmoor is into its third year, and we are going from strength to strength.
With over 200 students on roll and our first set of A level results in the bag we are turning high aspirations into a reality.
We set out to provide something different, to build an environment that supports students in aspiring to the very best universities and careers, while also providing the care and individual attention that we all need to truly flourish.
The collegiate atmosphere and collective spirit of the Sixth Form at Southmoor is plain to see.
Our students are not always perfect – who is? – but when they slip up, they have shown that time and again they have the character to get back up and try again.
And the results are there to show it. Our first set of Year 13 results and our second set of Year 12 grades together show all the hard work of the last two years is really paying off.
Not only have we got a 100% pass rate across both years (the highest in the city) but 59% of those Year 13s are leaving with at least one A*-B grade, and two students leave us with A*A*A!
While our Year 13s have left for courses at top Russell Group universities, including Durham, Newcastle and Kings College London, to study subjects from history to computer science, the Year 12s will dwell on a superb set of AS grades.
Whether it is the 71% gaining at least one A-B, the 11% hitting AAB in at least two facilitating subjects – well above last year’s average for Sunderland – or even the four students who came out with four.
As each, they are on track to make our second year even better than our first.
Because that’s what we believe Sixth Form education is all about.
Academic excellence and high aspirations come as a matter of course, but underlying everything we do is the continuing effort to turn out more and more good people, committed citizens and future leaders.
And with applications from outside Southmoor doubling after our first year, we can see that people agree with us.
