Rising towards success at Sandhill

-

Two years of hard work from both students and staff is certainly paying off at Sandhill View Academy following our summer GCSE results.

Students and staff at the Academy are celebrating after a great improvement in GCSE results.

The school added more than 10% to its headline figure for students gaining five top GCSEs, moving from 36% to 46% this year. This represents an improvement of 18% in the last two years.

The school became a partner of Southmoor Academy two years ago, forming the Southmoor Multi Academy Trust.

This greater co-operation between the two schools has led to the improvements, which have included a whole new leadership team and many new teachers and support staff passionate about making Sandhill View an excellent centre for learning and aspiration, whilst preserving the level of care which has long been a hallmark of the school.

Dr Phil Ingram, who is executive of the Multi Academy Trust, has said: “The results are really very encouraging, especially as we can confidently predict that next year they are going to be even better.

“We are certain that next year Sandhill View will be in the top half of all schools in Sunderland. This is quite an achievement for a school which only two years ago had such disappointing results.”

There’s also no denying that parents and pupils are telling us that things are getting better, with pupil pride, self-respect and aspiration also on the rise!

Mr Richard Carr, Head of Sandhill View explained “The results are about everyone’s hard work, but there’s more to it than that.

The fact is that the results are only one symptom of a school which is undergoing transformation. Alongside the results, we have become a much happier, well-ordered environment where pupils recognise and appreciate the improvement in their school. This has become a really optimistic, can-do place where everyone pulls together.”

The school is not just working hard on improving results, we realise that schools are about much more than that, but that results are also improved by having happy, active and confident young people.

That’s why we have made a huge effort to make the most of the excellent facilities we have at Sandhill View Academy by providing our students with an exciting collection of clubs and activities where they can pursue their own interests and perhaps discover a talent or passion for something they never knew they had.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes at Sandhill is that the school now enjoys a special relationship with the Sixth Form at Southmoor where many of the successful GCSE candidates now have places. Teachers believe that the Sixth Form link has become a real motivator for the students, who know that they must achieve to progress and that there is fantastic opportunity to aspire to greater things if they work hard for it.

All of these changes have now begun to demonstrate a clear impact of how the Academy is moving forward, supported through the on-going commitments of our governors and parents.

We look forward to improving examination and student success over many years to come to make Sandhill View the outstanding school we all know it can be.

There is still much to do but we are confident we can get there.
