Junior sides beat weather for Ashbrooke

-

With both Sunderland’s first XV and injuryravaged ladies’ teams facing a weekend off, attention shifted to Ashbrooke’s junior sides.

Sunderland U14s made it five wins in a row on Sunday, scoring eight tries in a comfortable 48-17 victory over Middlesbrough on Teesside.

The flying Ashbrooke youngsters notched three tries in the first 20 mins by Adam Stormont, Joe Cowie and Dylan Colledge, two converted by fly-half Rory Dunne.

Newcomer Aliyan Mohammed scored his second try in three weeks, before a hat-trick by Ollie Beattie and a try for Caleb Lowes finished matters. Rowan May also added two conversions.

Featuring four debutants, the U13s lost out 25-35 to Redcar in a competitive game.

Sunderland’s dominant pack failed to capitalise on their advantage and Redcar’s speedy backs scored first.

Zak Kennedy and Adam Williams both grabbed a brace for Sunderland with newcomer Tye Wandless, a constant threat, crossing for a fifth after a powerful midfield drive. Out wide, Russell Chapman-Smith and newcomer Vincent Hessel both pinned Redcar back at every opportunity.

But the home side repelled Sunderland’s wave of attacks to secure their win.

Sunderland’s minis lost all their fixtures against Blaydon and neighbours Houghton lost all their fixtures to the freezing weather.
