Sunderland denied win by late equaliser

- Hockey

Sunderland Seconds continued their unbeaten league run in 2017 with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against a well-organised Richmond side.

Sunderland began strongly and played their best 10 minutes of hockey this season, scoring a fine early goal through young striker Robbie Potts, following a well-disguised through pass from midfielder Scott Paddon.

The striker then beat three Richmond defenders at the top of the circle with his intricate stick skills before slamming the ball home.

However, following the goal, Sunderland slackened off the pace and began to lose possession far too often.

This resulted in Richmond being given far too much space and they quickly scored on the break.

Sunderland regrouped and continued to press and scored a second through Adam Pawley, who nutmegged the Richmond keeper following another excellent through pass from striker Johnny Raine.

Richmond very nearly scored an equaliser just before half-time but consecutive saves on the line by Huw Cameron and Salim, as well as a point blank save by Sunderland keeper Tom Bradley left it 2-1 to Sunderland at half-time.

In the second half, Sunderland continued to press but missed a number of scoring opportunities to finish the game off.

Sunderland then temporarily lost two players through ill disclipline and Richmond scored an equaliser just before the end.

There was a joint manof-the-match award with midfielder Scott Paddon having an excellent game and Tom Bradley, the inform keeper, making some fine saves.

Sunderland play local rivals Durham City this weekend.
