Wagner on a high with ‘quality’ win

-

In-form Huddersfield Town moved within four points of second-top Brighton after a stirring 3-2 Championship win at bottom club Rotherham United last night.

Joe Lolley cancelled out an early opener from the Millers’ Sam Ajayi before Tom Adeyemi’s stunning long-range strike put Rotherham back in front.

But Elias Kachunga equalised before Tommy Smith stepped up to make it 3-2 in stoppage time.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner said: “People said Brighton and Leeds was a statement; this was a real statement. We showed character and quality. It was a last minute winner, but not a lucky win.”

Brighton stayed a point behind leaders Newcastle after being held 1-1 by Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich.

Luke Chambers headed the visitors into a surprise lead, but Tomer Hemed levelled from the spot. Brighton’s Glenn Murray hit the post in added time.

Fourth-top Reading came from behind to beat Brentford 3-2 with strikes from Danny Williams and sub Roy Beerens in the final 13 minutes.

Leeds kept up their play-off push as Chris Wood and Pablo Hernandez saw off Bristol City 2-1, while ex-Sunderland striker Darren Bent netted twice for Derby in a 4-3 home loss to Cardiff, for whom Joe Ralls hit a lastgasp penalty winner.

Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa were thumped 3-1 by Barnsley, with Tom Bradshaw (2) and Adam Armstrong netting.
