Leading firms have pledged support for a scheme which improves the employability of young Sunderland people.

The fifth Work Discovery Week is on the way to the city and it will run from June 26 to June 30, this year.

It offers careers advice and vital experience to more than 1,000 youngsters – and it has excellent backing.

It is supported by Sunderland City Council, SAFC and the North East Chamber of Commerce.

It is part of the successful Work Discovery Sunderland programme which helps provide more than 3,000 opportunities each academic year for students to develop employability skills and gain insight into industry.

Long-standing sponsors have confirmed their backing for this year’s event including Make IT Sunderland, Sunderland University, Sunderland College, and the North East LEP.

It has also won the support of Unipres, Accenture, Gentoo, Liebherr, Nissan and the Bridges.

Paul McEldon, co-chairman of Work Discovery Sunderland, said: “It may be some months away yet, but everyone involved in Work Discovery Week is working hard behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event offers even more choice and activities to help the city’s young people make career choices,.

“Coming towards the end of school days can be a daunting time, particularly for anyone who has no idea what they would like to do as career, and this is why Work Discovery Week is important.”

There are still opportunities for other firms and organisations to get involved.
