Medial ligament damage puts an end to Nelson’s season

-

Promising Sunderland youngster Andrew Nelson is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 19-year-old forward joined League Two club Hartlepool United on loan at the end of January and had enjoyed an eventful spell at Victoria Park.

But his loan spell and season has been cut short after scan results confirmed he has damaged the medial ligaments in his knee.

Nelson was forced off only minutes after coming on as a substitute in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle.

The teenager was sent for an MRI scan and results confirmed the extent of the damage, which means he is now unlikely to play any further part this campaign.

“The scan confirmed our worst fears,” said Pools’ head physio,IanGallagher.“Andrew has now returned to Sunderland for treatment, but the nature of the injury means it’s doubtful that he will be able to play again this season.”

Nelson’s appearance on Saturday was his fourth in a Pools shirt, having started the previous three games.

He enjoyed an eventful Pools debut against Yeovil, providing the assist for the opening goal before conceding the penalty from which the visitors equalised.

“It’s so unfortunate for Andrew and for us,” said Pools boss Dave Jones.

“He’s come here looking to gain some senior experience, had done well in the games he’s played and has slotted in well with the rest of the lads.

“As is the nature of football, this will offer an opportunity for someone else to show what they can do for us and we wish Andrew all the best in his recovery.”

Nelson took to Twitter to post this message: “Devastated doesn’t come close to how I’m feeling right now, but that’s how football can be.

“I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Hartlepool United, you’ve given me the experience and the opportunity to see football from a different perspective and for that I won’t forget it anytime soon.

“I would like to wish the fans, the coaching staff and the players all the best for the season and hopefully turn things around in time.

“Thank you.”
